What Is Keratoconus?

Keratoconus is an eye disease that facilitates the thinning of the middle of the cornea which makes the cornea bulge out in a cone-like shape resulting in not only significant visual impairment but also the distortion of the normal proportions of your eyes. Though there is no known cause or reason for the occurrence of Keratoconus many experts believe that excessive eye-rubbing could lead to this peculiar condition.

The cornea is the clear outer lens of your eyes, and usually, it has a shape similar to that of a ball. Tiny fibers in your eyes help to keep your cornea in place. When these worsen, the structure can no longer hold its shape and bulges outwards, causing keratoconus condition.

Though there is no known cause or reason for the occurrence of Keratoconus many experts believe that excessive eye-rubbing could lead to this peculiar condition.

Some researchers also believe that the condition is more likely to acquire from birth. Given below are a few things that have been found in link with the keratoconus condition.

Family history – If you have family members with keratoconus condition, you will likely get the same and hence are essential-have regular eye examinations.

Age – keratoconus is known to acquire during the teenage and until the age of 30. However, it can also affect people after 40, but it is often considered a less common situation.

Disorders – Down syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and retinitis pigments are a few conditions linked with keratoconus.

Inflammation – Those who have asthma conditions or are likely to get frequent allergic conditions can break down the cornea tissues leading to this eye condition.

Symptoms of Keratoconus

Keratoconus can change your vision in two ways. Irregular astigmatism is one condition that occurs as a result of this change where the shape of your cornea changes from a ball to a cone, making the smooth surface into a wavy form.

The vision can also develop into nearsightedness, where you may find it difficult to see distant objects. You may also encounter other symptoms like;

  • Blurred or distorted vision
  • Light streaks
  • Double when looking from one eye
  • Halos around light
  • Sudden worsening in vision
  • Frequent prescription changes in eyeglasses
  • Issues in night driving

Keratoconus Treatment

The main symptoms of an individual developing this eye disease are usually; blurred or distorted vision.

Keratoconus is an eye problem that does not cause total blindness but may result in legal blindness if neglected or not recognized and treated. The treatment available for Keratoconus is the novel technique of cross-linking or CXL that utilizes custom made riboflavin drops to saturate the cornea and then activated by the ultraviolet-A light. This then combines with a laser with high sensitivity will derive you the results that you require to restore your eyes back to its usual appearance and function.
